General Waste and The Painting Industry: SGI Keeps a Staunch Eye On it!

Our last blog explored how the eco friendly tools and equipment we use benefit our environment and sustainability plan. You can read that article by clicking here.

General waste and the painting industry is what we will be exploring today. It’s often not talked about in general, however general waste and the painting industry is something that all members of industry, clients and the wider community should be concerned about.

Examples of General Waste that we can encounter in the painting and decorating industry:

  • Plastics
  • Metals
  • Ceramics
  • Cleaning materials
  • General packaging materials including cardboard
  • Wallpaper
  • Solid waste
  • Industrial/Commercial waste
  • Construction debris
  • Household hazardous waste.

We must also consider landfill when examining General waste and the painting industry. Landfill is the disposal of waste material by burying it in the ground. In other words it’s a garbage dump. It is a highly common and old form of waste disposal that has many negative ramifications for our environment:

  • It is a massive source of global pollution.
  • Buried waste takes a very long time to decompose.
  • Toxins, greenhouse gases and leachate are major problematic key features of landfills. Leachate is contaminated liquid that is generated from percolating water through a waste disposal site. It gathers contaminants and can move into subsurface areas (below the earth’s surface)
  • Landfills produce methane, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen, and non methane organic compounds. These gases can also contribute to climate change and create smog if left uncontrolled.
  • Landfills destroy natural habitat for wildlife.
  • Emissions from landfills can reduce the health levels of people who live and work around them.

Staunch Greco Industries’ General Waste Plan:

(Note: Unwanted Paints will be covered in a subsequent blog article)

For smaller scale projects our staunch team gather all the general waste that comes from your project and we take it to the local recycling centre, where each item is disposed of/recycled in a responsible manner.

For large to larger scale project we hire a rental bin where general waste is temporarily placed up until the project is complete. We employ the services of an eco-friendly  waste management company who will come and pick up the general waste and dispose of it/recycle it in a responsible manner

Staunch Greco Industries’ Plan to Reduce the Landfill Matter:

Using a composting system for green waste.

Recycling items that we can personally re-use again ie drop sheets, paint brushes, rollers, paint mixing trays, empty tins and jars. Alternatively other recyclable items such as paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, aluminum and steel is taken to responsible recycling centres.

Reducing the amount of paper we use by relying on modern digital technology.

Using refillable coffee and water cups when we are working as opposed to buying bottled water or coffee in paper cups.
