One significant reason is the historical architecture. It is simply striking and beautiful. We appreciate that old world craftsmanship.

In Melbourne you see a great variety of historical homes and we certainly do love painting and decorating them!

Therefore, it makes sense for us to do an exploration series of the different types of historical homes in Melbourne on our website blog, our Facebook and our Instagram.

Painting Late Victorian Houses in Melbourne: Summary

Establishment of Late Victorian Houses falls between the years of 1875 and 1901. Late Victorian Houses are a reflection of wealth growth and national confidence regarding a nation that was still so very young.
With national confidence and development and wealth growth houses became more grander and more ornate. You can definitely see elements of the Italianate style.

Stand alone homes generally have a projecting room. Terraces shrunk whilst a projection of veranda wing walls was a trend.

Exterior:

Brickwork is generally multi coloured. Rendered walls, arches, and moulded ornaments in an Italianate theme are dominant. Iron lacework is common, as well as multicolored tile patterns on the veranda. You will see arched doorways and windows. You will also see the beautiful blue and red stain glass on entry doors and windows and the use of triple windows.

The gardens will most likely contain plants found in Mid Victorian homes including Aloes, ferns and bamboos.
Fences often come in rendered brick work or palisade style with cast iron spears featuring ornamentation.

Interior:

Ornamentation inside these homes is rather grand. The colour schemes now begin to become more so adventurous. Less simple, and more so complex and varied. The wallpaper styles also take on a grander and more complex visual character.
